A Congress office at Keezhattoor in Kannur district, Kerala, was vandalised allegedly by CPI(M) workers on May 15, 2024, following a clash during a local election campaign. The incident occurred after a political dispute escalated into violence between workers of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF).
The violence began during campaigning for the upcoming local body elections. Reports indicate a dispute over campaign materials led to a physical altercation. Following this, a group of individuals allegedly linked to the CPI(M) attacked the Congress committee office, causing damage to furniture, windows, and other property.
The Congress party has accused the CPI(M) of orchestrating the attack and has filed a complaint with the police, demanding the arrest of those responsible. They allege a pre-planned attack and have called for strong action against the perpetrators. The Youth Congress also staged a protest march to the police station.
The CPI(M) has denied direct involvement, claiming that the incident was a spontaneous reaction from local party workers provoked by the Congress’s actions. They have also accused Congress workers of initiating the violence. A counter-complaint has been filed by the CPI(M).
Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation. Several individuals have been detained for questioning from both sides. The police are reviewing CCTV footage and gathering evidence to identify those involved in the vandalism and the initial clash.
The incident has heightened political tensions in the region, already charged due to the ongoing election campaign. This is not an isolated incident, as Kannur district has a history of political clashes between the Congress and CPI(M). Security has been increased in the area to prevent further escalation of violence. Local Congress leaders have called for a hartal (shutdown) in Keezhattoor to protest the attack.
