Four individuals have been arrested in Karnataka in connection with a series of thefts targeting temples across the state. The arrests were made by the Karnataka Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to investigate the incidents.
The recovered stolen property includes approximately 3.2 kg of gold ornaments, a silver idol, and ₹6.5 lakh in cash. The thefts occurred in multiple locations including Mandya, Hassan, and Ramanagara districts.
The arrested individuals are identified as members of an inter-state gang with a history of similar crimes. Police investigations revealed the gang operated by identifying temples with lax security and carrying out thefts during the late-night or early morning hours. They primarily targeted gold and silver ornaments donated to the temples.
The SIT team followed leads developed from previous investigations and surveillance to identify and apprehend the suspects. The recovered gold is estimated to be worth around ₹1.1 crore.
Police are currently working to determine the full extent of the gang’s activities and identify any additional accomplices. They are also investigating whether the stolen ornaments were fenced through established channels or sold directly to individuals.
The investigation began following a surge in reported temple thefts across Karnataka, raising concerns about temple security and the need for increased vigilance. Authorities have urged temple management committees to enhance security measures, including installing CCTV cameras and employing security personnel.
Further investigation is underway to trace the source of funding for the gang and to recover any remaining stolen property. The police are also exploring potential links to other similar cases reported in neighboring states. The recovered items are being verified and will be returned to the respective temple authorities after completing the necessary legal procedures.
