Four fall ill after eating Datura leaf curry in Kakinada district

Four individuals in Andhra Pradesh’s Kakinada district fell ill after consuming a curry made with *Datura* leaves, mistakenly identified as spinach. The incident occurred in Thondangi village on May 16, 2024.

The affected individuals—three women and one man—experienced symptoms including blurred vision, dizziness, and stomach pain after eating the curry prepared by one of the women. They were immediately rushed to a local hospital in Jaggampeta and later shifted to Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ongole for further treatment.

Initial reports indicate their condition is stable, but they remain under observation. Doctors confirmed the illness was caused by the consumption of *Datura* leaves, a highly toxic plant. The leaves resemble spinach, leading to the accidental misidentification.

Local authorities, including the Kakinada District Medical and Health Officer, have launched an investigation into the incident. Health officials are educating villagers about the dangers of consuming unidentified plants and the importance of correctly identifying edible greens. They are emphasizing the need to purchase vegetables from reliable sources and to be cautious when foraging for wild plants.

This is not an isolated incident; similar cases of accidental *Datura* poisoning have been reported in the region previously, often due to mistaken identity with edible greens. The *Datura* plant contains potent anticholinergic compounds that can cause severe neurological and physiological effects. Authorities are intensifying awareness campaigns to prevent future occurrences and ensure public safety. The incident highlights the critical need for public education regarding poisonous plants and safe food practices in rural areas.
