A man in Hyderabad was sentenced to seven days in jail and fined ₹1,000 for misbehavior with a visiting actress at the Charminar monument. The incident occurred on February 25th, 2024, while the actress, identified as Priya Prakash Varrier, was visiting the iconic landmark.
The accused, identified as Syed Bari, allegedly attempted to take a selfie with the actress and, when she refused, harassed and misbehaved with her. A police case was registered based on a complaint filed by the actress’s manager.
The court found Syed Bari guilty under Section 354A of the Indian Penal Code (assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty). The court considered the seriousness of the offense and the need to send a strong message against such behavior in public spaces.
The prosecution presented evidence including witness testimonies from the actress’s team and security personnel present at the scene. The defense argued for a lenient sentence, but the court upheld the conviction and imposed the maximum punishment allowed under the relevant section of the IPC.
This case highlights the issue of harassment faced by public figures, particularly women, in public spaces. Police officials stated that they are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all visitors, especially women, at tourist destinations like Charminar. The quick conviction in this case is being seen as a positive step towards deterring such incidents and creating a safer environment for everyone. The court’s decision aims to send a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated and will be dealt with strictly under the law.
