Tech developed by Indian talent abroad being bought back by domestic industry from foreign markets, says Pradhan

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan urged for significantly increased private sector investment in research and innovation within India, citing the current levels as insufficient. He emphasized that a robust national system for research and innovation requires collaborative efforts between public and private entities.

Pradhan highlighted the need to move beyond a solely government-funded research model, advocating for a policy environment that incentivizes private companies to allocate more resources to R&D. He pointed to successful models in countries like the US, South Korea, and Taiwan, where private sector contributions form a substantial portion of total research spending.

The Minister stressed the importance of translational research – converting scientific discoveries into practical applications and marketable products. He advocated for establishing a strong linkage between research institutions and industries to facilitate this process. This includes fostering collaborations, technology transfer, and the commercialization of innovations.

Pradhan also called for a shift in mindset, encouraging a culture of risk-taking and entrepreneurship within the research ecosystem. He suggested simplifying regulatory processes and providing financial support to startups and innovators.

He specifically mentioned the National Research Foundation (NRF) as a key instrument for channeling and leveraging private investment in research. The NRF aims to create a conducive environment for research, provide funding opportunities, and promote collaboration.

The Minister’s address came during the inaugural session of the National Research and Innovation Conclave, organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI). The conclave focused on strategies to enhance India’s research and innovation capabilities and promote a knowledge-based economy.

Pradhan also noted the importance of aligning research priorities with national needs and global challenges, focusing on areas like sustainable development, climate change, and healthcare. He encouraged research institutions to focus on developing indigenous technologies and reducing dependence on foreign sources. He believes increased private investment, coupled with a supportive policy framework, will be crucial for India to become a global leader in research and innovation.
