The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has issued a show-cause notice to wrestler Vinesh Phogat for alleged disciplinary violations during the recent Patiala camp and has declared her ineligible to participate in any wrestling events until June 26th.
The notice stems from Vinesh’s conduct during the national camp preparation for the Asian Olympic Qualifiers, specifically regarding her demands for specific training partners and a dedicated dietician. She reportedly insisted on training only with specific sparring partners and requested a personal dietician, which the WFI deemed as disrupting the camp and creating a divisive atmosphere.
Vinesh had previously requested exemption from the trials for the Asian Olympic Qualifiers, citing mental health concerns and a knee injury, and requested direct participation based on her ranking. The WFI refused this request and insisted on trials. Following the refusal, she protested at the camp and reportedly engaged in a heated exchange with WFI officials.
The WFI alleges Vinesh’s actions were a deliberate attempt to disrupt the camp and undermine the authority of the federation. The show-cause notice asks Vinesh to explain her conduct within a week.
The WFI has also stated that Vinesh’s behaviour was against the principles of fair play and discipline. Her ineligibility extends to all competitions, including ranking series events, until the matter is resolved.
This decision impacts Vinesh’s preparation for the Paris Olympics, as she needs to compete to secure a quota place for India. The WFI maintains that all wrestlers will be selected through trials, ensuring a level playing field.
Other protesting wrestlers, including Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, have also faced similar actions from the WFI in the past, though their situations differ. The WFI’s actions are occurring amidst ongoing scrutiny and reforms following allegations of sexual harassment against former WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
