Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the residence of Makhanlal Sarkar, reported to be the oldest worker of the West Bengal BJP, in North 24 Parganas district. Sarkar is 98 years old and has been associated with the Jana Sangh, the BJP’s precursor, since 1952.
The Prime Minister spent approximately 30 minutes with Sarkar and his family, receiving his blessings. Modi sat on the floor to speak with Sarkar, a gesture noted by media outlets. He inquired about Sarkar’s health and well-being, and discussed his long association with the party and its ideological evolution.
Sarkar recounted his experiences of working with leaders like Syama Prasad Mookerjee and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and his participation in various movements during his decades-long political career. He expressed his happiness at witnessing the BJP’s growth under Modi’s leadership.
The visit is seen as a significant outreach to long-time party workers in West Bengal, a state where the BJP has been striving to expand its influence. It also comes ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The Prime Minister highlighted Sarkar’s dedication and sacrifice as an inspiration for party workers.
Local BJP leaders described the visit as a moment of immense pride and motivation for the party cadre in the state. Sarkar’s home was decorated for the occasion, and a large crowd gathered outside to catch a glimpse of the Prime Minister. The event received extensive media coverage in West Bengal and nationally. Modi also had tea with Sarkar’s family during his visit. The Prime Minister’s office shared photos and videos of the interaction on social media platforms.
