Suvendu Adhikari is a prominent West Bengal politician currently serving as the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. He began his political career in the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) and rose through the ranks, becoming a key strategist and a powerful minister handling portfolios like Transport, Irrigation & Waterways, and Disaster Management & Civil Defence.
Adhikari’s influence stemmed from his strong organizational skills and control over a significant voter base in Purba Medinipur district, particularly Nandigram, where he played a crucial role in the 2007 anti-land acquisition movement. This movement catapulted him to prominence and solidified his image as a grassroots leader.
However, he defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in December 2020, citing grievances against the AITC leadership and alleging corruption and a disconnect from the people. His switch was a major blow to Mamata Banerjee’s party, especially ahead of the 2021 Assembly elections.
In the 2021 elections, Adhikari contested against Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram, resulting in a highly publicized and closely contested battle. He initially won the seat, but Banerjee defeated him in a subsequent recount. He simultaneously won from the Bhabanipur constituency, vacating Nandigram and retaining his seat in the Assembly.
Currently, Adhikari is a vocal critic of the Mamata Banerjee government, frequently raising issues of corruption, law and order, and alleged political violence. He is considered a key figure in the BJP’s efforts to expand its footprint in West Bengal and is widely seen as a potential Chief Ministerial candidate in future elections, particularly in 2026.
His political strategy focuses on highlighting perceived failures of the state government and mobilizing support from disgruntled sections of the population. He maintains a strong presence in his traditional strongholds and actively engages with the public through rallies and public meetings. His past association with the AITC and intimate knowledge of its workings are often leveraged in his criticisms.
