Kochi Corporation plans cloud kitchen for Indira Canteens

Kochi Corporation intends to establish a central cloud kitchen to enhance the operations of its Indira Canteens, aiming for better efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Currently, food preparation is decentralized across various locations, leading to logistical challenges and increased expenses.

The proposed cloud kitchen, planned near the Corporation office, will consolidate food production. This centralized approach is expected to reduce operational costs related to staffing, ingredient procurement, and transportation. The Corporation anticipates savings of approximately ₹30 lakh annually through this consolidation.

Indira Canteens provide affordable meals to the public, particularly targeting low-income groups and migrant labourers. There are currently 12 canteens operating across the city. The cloud kitchen will initially cater to eight canteens, with plans to extend coverage to all 12 in a phased manner.

The project’s estimated cost is ₹1.5 crore, with funding sourced from the Corporation’s own funds and potential contributions from CSR initiatives. The kitchen will be equipped with modern facilities and adhere to stringent hygiene standards.

Beyond cost reduction, the Corporation aims to improve the quality and consistency of meals served at the canteens. Centralized production allows for better quality control and standardized recipes. The cloud kitchen will also facilitate the introduction of varied menu options.

The Corporation is exploring options for online ordering and delivery services from the Indira Canteens, potentially expanding their reach and convenience. A detailed project report is being prepared, and the Corporation is seeking necessary approvals to expedite the implementation of the cloud kitchen. The initiative is viewed as a significant step towards strengthening the Indira Canteen program and ensuring food security for vulnerable populations in Kochi. The project is expected to be completed within a year.
