Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s continued presence in the state despite requests from the Congress leadership to participate in a debate on the Centre’s alleged discrimination towards Kerala is causing friction within the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA).
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge will hold a crucial meeting with senior Congress leaders this evening to discuss the matter. The Congress wants Vijayan to engage in a public debate with Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan regarding the financial situation of Kerala and the state’s accusations of central government neglect.
The Congress feels Vijayan’s absence undermines the alliance’s joint campaign against the BJP and weakens their narrative of opposition unity. They argue his participation is essential to demonstrate a united front and highlight the alleged injustices faced by Kerala.
Vijayan, however, has remained in Kerala, citing pre-scheduled commitments and the ongoing Nava Kerala Sadas, a state-level outreach program. He has reportedly expressed reluctance to debate Satheesan, viewing it as a local issue that doesn’t require his direct involvement.
Sources indicate the Congress is not satisfied with the explanations offered and views Vijayan’s decision as a deliberate attempt to avoid a potentially uncomfortable discussion. The party believes a debate would allow them to effectively counter the state government’s arguments and rally public support.
The situation has led to internal discussions within the Congress, with some leaders suggesting a stronger stance to ensure all INDIA partners contribute actively to joint campaigns. The meeting with Kharge aims to formulate a strategy to address the issue and prevent similar situations from arising in the future. The outcome of the meeting will be crucial in determining how the Congress navigates this delicate situation and maintains alliance cohesion ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. The Congress is keen to project a united front and avoid any perception of discord within the INDIA bloc.
