Karnataka among top three States in corruption: NCRB

Karnataka ranks among the top three states in India with the highest number of corruption-related cases registered in 2023, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data. The state recorded 552 cases, placing it behind Maharashtra (1,255 cases) and Rajasthan (854 cases).

The NCRB report indicates a rise in corruption cases nationwide, with a total of 5,560 cases registered in 2023 compared to 5,109 in 2022, representing a 8.8% increase.

Within Karnataka, the majority of cases fall under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Specifically, 348 cases were related to bribery (demanding or accepting illegal gratification), while 114 involved criminal misconduct by public servants.

Bengaluru Urban district accounted for the highest number of corruption cases within Karnataka, with 228 reported instances. Other districts with significant numbers include Ramanagara (44), Mandya (36), and Dakshina Kannada (33).

The conviction rate in corruption cases in Karnataka remains low, with only 8.8% of cases ending in conviction in 2023. This is slightly higher than the national average of 6.7%. However, a significant number of cases are still pending trial.

Experts point to several factors contributing to the high number of reported cases, including increased awareness of anti-corruption mechanisms, greater willingness to report incidents, and more proactive investigation by agencies. The report also highlights the importance of strengthening anti-corruption measures and improving the efficiency of the judicial system to ensure swift and effective prosecution of offenders. The data reflects cases registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act.
