Driving change in an autorickshaw: This Bengaluru NGO is helping single mothers, abuse survivors rise from the ashes

The Hindu article details the work of “The Prajwala Project,” a Bengaluru-based NGO, empowering single mothers and survivors of domestic abuse through auto-rickshaw driving. Founded by Sanchita Sharma, the organization addresses the economic vulnerability that often traps women in abusive situations or prevents them from leaving.

Prajwala provides comprehensive support, beginning with psychological counseling and legal aid to help women navigate trauma and secure their rights. Crucially, the NGO covers the entire cost of training, obtaining a driver’s license, and purchasing an auto-rickshaw – a significant financial barrier for many. They partner with banks for loan assistance and offer ongoing support with vehicle maintenance and operational costs.

The program isn’t simply about providing a livelihood; it’s about fostering independence and dignity. Many participants come from extremely challenging backgrounds, including histories of severe abuse, abandonment, and poverty. Driving an auto-rickshaw offers a flexible work schedule, allowing them to balance work with childcare and other responsibilities.

Since its inception, Prajwala has trained and supported over 100 women, with a high success rate. The women report increased financial stability, improved self-esteem, and a sense of empowerment. The initiative has also challenged societal norms, with women successfully operating in a traditionally male-dominated profession.

The article highlights the stories of several beneficiaries, illustrating the transformative impact of the program. One woman escaped an abusive marriage and now provides for her children, while another found a path out of debt and despair. Prajwala’s model is being recognized as a sustainable solution to address both economic hardship and gender-based violence, offering a pathway to a brighter future for vulnerable women in Bengaluru. The NGO is actively seeking funding to expand its reach and support more women in need.
