GCC carries out cattle raid in Arumbakkam

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) conducted a cattle raid in Arumbakkam, Chennai, on May 16, 2024, seizing 32 cattle that were being illegally grazed on public roads and pavements. This action addresses long-standing complaints from residents regarding traffic disruptions and public safety concerns caused by stray cattle.

The raid, initiated following numerous petitions and concerns raised by ward councillors and local residents, focused on areas around Koyambedu and Arumbakkam. The GCC had previously issued warnings to cattle owners about the prohibition of grazing cattle on public spaces, citing violations of the Chennai City Municipal Corporation Act, 1952.

The seized cattle are currently being held at a temporary shelter established by the GCC in Perungudi. Owners are being given a deadline to claim their animals by paying a fine. If unclaimed within the stipulated timeframe, the cattle will be handed over to goshalas (cow shelters) or other animal welfare organizations.

GCC officials stated that the operation was necessary as the presence of cattle on roads posed a significant hazard to motorists and pedestrians, contributing to traffic congestion and accidents. Residents had also expressed concerns about hygiene and sanitation issues related to cattle dung on public pathways.

This raid is part of a larger effort by the GCC to enforce regulations regarding stray animals and maintain public order. Similar operations are planned in other areas of the city experiencing similar issues. The GCC has emphasized its commitment to ensuring the safety and convenience of citizens while also considering the welfare of the animals. The fines collected from cattle owners will be used to cover the costs associated with the cattle’s upkeep and eventual transfer to appropriate shelters. The corporation is also exploring long-term solutions to prevent recurrence of the problem, including stricter enforcement and potential designated grazing areas outside city limits.
