Northern Discom to strengthen workforce safety with ‘One Minute Rule’

The Telangana State Northern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSNPDCL) is implementing a “One Minute Rule” to enhance workforce safety across its operations. This initiative mandates all field staff to spend a minimum of one minute at the work spot after completing their task, focusing on a safety checklist before leaving.

The rule addresses concerns about hasty departures from work locations leading to accidents. It aims to ensure a systematic review of the work area for potential hazards like loose connections, untied wires, or improperly secured equipment. The checklist includes verifying proper grounding, ensuring tools are accounted for, and confirming the overall safety of the surroundings.

TSNPDCL Chairman and Managing Director A.V. Ranganathan emphasized that the rule isn’t about extending work hours but about instilling a safety-first mindset. He highlighted that a significant number of accidents occur not during the work itself, but while leaving the site.

The company is also investing in safety equipment and training programs. This includes providing improved personal protective equipment (PPE) like helmets, gloves, and safety shoes, and conducting regular refresher courses on safety protocols. A dedicated safety cell has been established to monitor implementation and address concerns.

Furthermore, TSNPDCL is leveraging technology to improve safety. They are introducing a mobile application for reporting near misses and hazards, allowing for quicker identification and resolution of potential risks. The app also facilitates real-time monitoring of field staff locations and work progress.

The initiative follows a recent increase in workplace accidents within the TSNPDCL, prompting a comprehensive review of safety measures. The company aims to reduce accidents by 50% through this multi-pronged approach. The “One Minute Rule” is being rolled out across all divisions and is expected to become an integral part of the company’s safety culture. Regular audits and inspections will be conducted to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
