Electricity consumption dips as summer rain gives Kerala some respite from heat

Kerala has experienced a decrease in electricity consumption following recent summer rains that have brought respite from the intense heatwave. Daily electricity consumption dropped to 86.42 million units (MU) on May 16th, a significant decline from the peak of 94.38 MU recorded on April 29th. This reduction is attributed to the cooling effect of the rainfall and a corresponding decrease in the use of fans, air conditioners, and other cooling appliances.

The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) had initially anticipated record-high electricity demand this summer due to the prolonged dry spell and soaring temperatures. Peak demand was forecasted to potentially reach 98 MU. However, the timely arrival of pre-monsoon showers has altered this projection.

Despite the dip, current consumption remains higher than the same period last year. On May 16th, 2023, consumption was 79.88 MU. The KSEB attributes this overall increase to the state’s economic recovery and increased industrial activity.

Hydel power generation has also received a boost from the rainfall. Reservoir levels in key dams have improved, allowing for increased electricity generation from hydro-electric projects. This has reduced the reliance on more expensive power sources like thermal power plants. The KSEB is cautiously optimistic that continued rainfall will further alleviate the demand pressure and improve the power supply situation.

The state is still facing a slight power deficit, currently around 2-3 MU, but this is significantly less than the earlier projected deficit of 8-10 MU. The KSEB is closely monitoring the weather conditions and adjusting power generation accordingly. They are also implementing demand-side management measures to optimize electricity usage.

The article highlights that while the immediate crisis has eased, sustained rainfall is crucial to maintain stable power supply throughout the summer months and avoid potential load shedding. The KSEB continues to urge consumers to use electricity judiciously.
