A radio-collared elephant, Monitor, previously part of a conflict mitigation project in Wayanad, was found near the Aruvanthara area of the Aralam Farm in Kannur district, Kerala. Monitor had wandered approximately 120 km from his original location, crossing the Wayanad-Kannur border.
The elephant was initially collared in February 2023 as part of efforts to track and manage problematic wild elephants causing damage to crops and property in human settlements. His movements were closely monitored by the Forest Department using GPS data.
Monitor’s extended journey raised concerns as he entered areas with a history of human-animal conflict. The Forest Department initiated measures to track his location and prevent potential incidents. A rapid response team was deployed to monitor his movements and guide him away from populated areas.
The Kerala High Court intervened, directing the Forest Department to take immediate steps to ensure Monitor’s safety and prevent any conflict with local residents. The court also requested a report detailing the measures taken to address the situation.
Forest officials believe Monitor’s movement could be linked to the search for mating opportunities or a response to seasonal changes in food and water availability. They are attempting to understand the reasons behind his long-distance travel.
Currently, Monitor is being monitored continuously, and the department is working to ensure his safe passage back towards Wayanad or to a suitable forest area. The incident highlights the challenges of managing wildlife populations and mitigating human-animal conflict in Kerala, particularly with increasing habitat loss and fragmentation. The department is analyzing the data from Monitor’s collar to improve future conflict mitigation strategies.
