Fire safety mock drill conducted at Ongole government hospital

A fire safety mock drill was conducted at the Government General Hospital (GGH) in Ongole, Andhra Pradesh on March 28, 2024. The drill, organized by the District Fire Officer, involved 25 fire personnel and aimed to assess the hospital’s preparedness for fire emergencies and to train staff on evacuation procedures.

The scenario simulated a fire outbreak in the hospital’s old operation theatre complex. The drill tested the functionality of fire alarms, fire extinguishers, and the overall evacuation plan. Hospital staff, including doctors, nurses, and support personnel, participated in the exercise, practicing the safe and efficient evacuation of patients.

Key observations during the drill included the need for improved coordination between hospital staff and the fire department, and the importance of maintaining clear evacuation routes. Fire officials highlighted the necessity of regular maintenance of fire safety equipment and emphasized the importance of staff training in using these tools effectively.

The drill identified some shortcomings in the hospital’s fire safety infrastructure, such as blocked passages and insufficient signage. Hospital Superintendent Dr. Ramakrishna advised staff to address these issues promptly to ensure a safer environment for patients and personnel.

The exercise also focused on the proper use of fire extinguishers and the importance of quickly alerting the fire department in case of a real emergency. Participants were instructed on methods to contain small fires before they escalate and the procedures for assisting patients with mobility issues during evacuation.

The District Fire Officer expressed satisfaction with the overall response of the hospital staff and emphasized the importance of conducting such drills periodically to maintain a high level of preparedness. The GGH administration committed to implementing the recommendations made by the fire department to enhance fire safety measures within the hospital premises. The drill was part of a broader initiative to improve fire safety standards in public institutions across the district.
