Elephant incursions into higher-elevation towns in The Nilgiris trigger alarm

Elephant incursions are increasing in higher elevation towns within the Nilgiris district, specifically in areas like Coonoor and Kotagiri, causing alarm among residents. Traditionally, elephant movement was concentrated in the lower elevation regions. However, changing climate patterns and habitat loss are driving elephants to seek food and water in these previously unaffected areas.

Recent incidents include elephants damaging plantations, entering residential areas, and causing property damage. A key concern is the increasing frequency of solitary male elephants venturing into these towns, posing a higher risk to both humans and the animals themselves. Forest Department officials attribute this shift to the depletion of natural food sources in their traditional habitats due to prolonged drought conditions and alterations in rainfall patterns.

The usual migration routes of elephants are being disrupted, forcing them to explore new territories. This is compounded by the expansion of tea and vegetable plantations, which encroach upon elephant corridors and fragment their habitat. Locals report increased sightings near tea estates and residential areas, leading to fear and anxiety.

The Forest Department is employing various mitigation strategies, including installing solar-powered electric fences, digging trenches, and conducting regular patrols. They are also attempting to drive the elephants back to their natural habitat using loud noises and by creating barriers. However, these measures are often temporary solutions.

Experts suggest a long-term strategy focusing on habitat restoration, creating alternative food sources within forests, and improving elephant corridors. Community involvement and awareness programs are also crucial to minimize human-elephant conflict. The department is working with plantation owners to implement preventative measures and is exploring the possibility of providing compensation for crop damage. The situation remains tense, and continued monitoring and proactive measures are essential to ensure the safety of both people and elephants. The increasing incursions highlight the urgent need for sustainable land management practices and a comprehensive conservation strategy.
