DMK explores backing AIADMK, Tamil Nadu Governor tells Vijay he hasn’t established majority

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin convened a meeting with leaders of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) to discuss seat-sharing for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. This follows increasing pressure from second-line DMK leaders advocating for a potential alliance with the AIADMK.

The core issue is the DMK’s assessment of the national political landscape, particularly the strength of the BJP-led NDA, and the desire to maximize seat wins in Tamil Nadu. Some DMK leaders believe an AIADMK alliance, despite ideological differences, could significantly improve their chances, especially given the AIADMK’s existing voter base.

However, significant hurdles remain. The Congress party, a key SPA member, is reportedly strongly opposed to aligning with the AIADMK due to its past association with the BJP and concerns about its corruption record. Other allies like the VCK and the Left parties also express reservations.

The meeting aimed to gauge the willingness of alliance partners to consider a broader coalition including the AIADMK. Stalin emphasized the need for unity within the SPA and a collective decision-making process. He reportedly sought the views of each party leader on the possibility of expanding the alliance.

The AIADMK, currently without formal allies, has indicated openness to discussions with the DMK, but on terms that maintain its dignity and influence. Key AIADMK demands would likely include a substantial number of seats and a respectful partnership.

The outcome of these deliberations is crucial. A continued SPA alliance without the AIADMK would see the DMK navigating seat-sharing among existing partners. A potential DMK-AIADMK alliance would reshape the political dynamics of Tamil Nadu and significantly impact the national election outcome. The decision rests with Stalin, balancing the internal pressures within the DMK and the concerns of its existing allies. The situation remains fluid, with further discussions expected.
