Suvendu aide among 3 killed as post-poll violence rocks Bengal

Tensions are high in Kolkata’s New Market area following a demolition drive initiated by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) on February 29th, 2024. The KMC used bulldozers to raze structures along Bertram Street and Hogg Street, areas surrounding the iconic New Market.

The demolition is part of a road-widening project aimed at easing traffic congestion. However, shop owners and local residents allege they were given insufficient notice and are disputing the legality of the demolition. They claim the KMC failed to adequately compensate them for the losses incurred.

Approximately 80-100 shops, many decades old, were affected by the drive. Shopkeepers report receiving eviction notices only a few days prior, leaving them with little time to relocate or salvage their goods. Many businesses were abruptly shut down, causing significant financial hardship.

The demolition sparked protests, with shop owners and CPI(M) supporters staging demonstrations and attempting to obstruct the bulldozers. Several protestors were detained by police. Local CPI(M) leaders have accused the KMC of acting arbitrarily and without proper consideration for the livelihoods of those affected.

KMC officials maintain the demolition was conducted according to legal procedures and that adequate notice was served. They state the road-widening project is crucial for improving traffic flow and public safety. The KMC also claims that alternative arrangements are being considered for the displaced shopkeepers, though details remain unclear.

The situation remains volatile, with shop owners vowing to continue their protests and seek legal recourse. The demolition has raised concerns about the preservation of New Market’s heritage and the impact on small businesses in the area. The affected shopkeepers are demanding proper rehabilitation and fair compensation for their losses. The KMC plans to continue the demolition process in phases.
