The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed West Bengal’s Chief Secretary and Director General of Police to immediately arrest individuals involved in post-poll violence following the Lok Sabha elections. This order stems from reports of widespread clashes, arson, and damage to property across multiple districts.
Specific incidents highlighted include violence in Cooch Behar, where clashes between supporters of different parties resulted in injuries and property destruction. Similar incidents were reported in other districts like North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, and Kolkata. The Commission has demanded a comprehensive report detailing the arrests made and the measures taken to restore peace within 48 hours. It has also instructed the state administration to seize all illegal arms and ammunition.
