Namakkal Tamil Nadu Kongu Ilangyar Koottamaippu (NTK) candidate for the Salem North constituency, V. Elangovan, plans to plant 6,450 saplings as a gesture of gratitude to voters, regardless of the election outcome. This number corresponds to the total votes secured by him in the 2019 Lok Sabha election from the Salem parliamentary constituency, which includes the North assembly segment.
The initiative, titled “Gratitude Forest,” aims to create a small forest on a one-acre plot of land near Karungalpalayam. Elangovan intends to involve voters in the planting process, encouraging their participation as a symbol of collective responsibility towards the environment. He believes this act will demonstrate a different kind of politics, moving beyond traditional methods of thanking voters with gifts or celebrations.
The saplings will consist of various native species, including teak, sandalwood, mahogany, and fruit-bearing trees like mango, guava, and sapota. Elangovan emphasizes the environmental benefits of the project, highlighting its contribution to increasing green cover, improving air quality, and promoting biodiversity in the region. He has already secured the land through a lease agreement and plans to begin the planting process shortly after the election concludes.
The project’s cost, estimated at around ₹3.5 lakh, will be personally funded by Elangovan. He views it as a long-term investment in the well-being of the community and a tangible expression of his commitment to environmental sustainability. He hopes the “Gratitude Forest” will serve as a model for other candidates and inspire a shift towards more eco-conscious political practices. The initiative has garnered positive attention locally, with residents appreciating the unique approach to voter appreciation. Elangovan intends to maintain the forest with the help of local volunteers and ensure its long-term health and growth.
