India and Vietnam have officially elevated their bilateral relationship to an “Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,” signaling a deepening of cooperation across various sectors. This upgrade occurred during Vietnamese President Vo Van Thuong’s state visit to India, marking a significant moment in their long-standing friendship.
A key outcome of the visit was the setting of a $25 billion trade target, aiming to substantially increase bilateral commerce from its current levels. Both nations acknowledged the potential for growth, particularly in areas like trade in agricultural products, marine products, and manufactured goods. Discussions focused on removing trade barriers and enhancing connectivity to facilitate smoother exchange.
Defense cooperation remains a cornerstone of the partnership. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to collaborate in areas like defense industry cooperation, capacity building, and maritime security. This includes exploring opportunities for joint production and technology transfer.
The leaders also discussed cooperation in emerging technologies, including space, cybersecurity, and digital infrastructure. Recognizing the importance of a secure and resilient digital ecosystem, they agreed to enhance collaboration in these domains.
Energy security was another prominent topic, with discussions centered on oil and gas exploration and renewable energy projects. Vietnam expressed interest in India’s expertise in renewable energy technologies.
Furthermore, the two countries emphasized the importance of maintaining peace, stability, and adherence to international law in the Indo-Pacific region. They reiterated their support for a free and open Indo-Pacific, underpinned by respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Several MoUs were signed during the visit, covering areas such as digital payment infrastructure, cultural exchange, and cooperation in broadcasting. These agreements aim to strengthen people-to-people ties and foster greater understanding between the two nations.
President Thuong’s visit underscores the growing strategic convergence between India and Vietnam, driven by shared interests and a commitment to a multipolar world. The enhanced partnership is expected to unlock new opportunities for economic growth, security cooperation, and regional stability.
