Supreme Court should take cognisance of West Bengal poll process: Akhilesh Yadav

Akhilesh Yadav, Samajwadi Party chief, has requested the Supreme Court to intervene and take cognizance of the West Bengal election process. He alleges widespread irregularities and violence are impacting the fairness of the polls.

Yadav voiced concerns about central forces being obstructed from performing their duties, particularly in areas where opposition parties have a strong presence. He claims the state administration is actively hindering the free and fair conduct of elections.

Specifically, he pointed to incidents in Cooch Behar, where he alleges voters were prevented from exercising their franchise. He also raised concerns about alleged manipulation of EVMs and VVPATs, though details were not extensively provided in the report.

Yadav’s letter to the Supreme Court requests the court to direct the Election Commission of India (ECI) to ensure a fair and impartial election process. He asks for the deployment of central forces in all polling booths to instill confidence among voters.

He further suggests the court should direct the ECI to take immediate action against officials found to be complicit in the alleged irregularities. He believes a judicial intervention is crucial to safeguard the democratic process and ensure the elections reflect the true will of the people.

Yadav’s concerns echo similar complaints made by other opposition parties regarding the West Bengal elections. The allegations center around intimidation of voters, booth capturing, and a biased administration favoring the ruling Trinamool Congress.

The Samajwadi Party leader emphasizes the importance of a level playing field for all political parties and the need to protect the fundamental rights of voters. He believes the current situation necessitates the Supreme Court’s immediate attention to ensure a credible and democratic election outcome. He asserts that the integrity of the electoral process is at stake.
