Mysuru flyover plan puts 347 trees at risk; Khandre orders assessment

## Summary of The Hindu Article: Mysuru Flyover Plan & Tree Impact

A proposed flyover project in Mysuru, Karnataka, threatens 347 trees along the Outer Ring Road between Columbia Asia Hospital and the FSL Junction. The project, intended to ease traffic congestion, has sparked environmental concerns due to the significant number of trees slated for removal.

Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre has ordered a detailed assessment of the potential tree loss and instructed officials to explore alternatives that minimize environmental damage. This assessment will include evaluating the necessity of felling each tree and considering options like tree transplantation. Khandre emphasized the importance of balancing development with environmental protection, stating that tree removal should be the last resort.

The flyover is a 2.65 km project estimated to cost ₹232 crore. It aims to address traffic bottlenecks on a crucial stretch of the Outer Ring Road. However, environmentalists and local citizens have voiced strong opposition, highlighting the ecological value of the trees and their contribution to the city’s green cover.

Concerns raised include the impact on air quality, increased heat island effect, and loss of habitat for local wildlife. Activists argue that the project’s environmental impact assessment (EIA) was inadequate and did not fully consider the ecological consequences. They propose alternative solutions like optimizing traffic signals, improving public transportation, and exploring underground road options.

The assessment ordered by Khandre will be conducted by a committee comprising forest officials and experts. The committee will submit a report outlining the number of trees that can be saved, the feasibility of transplantation, and potential mitigation measures. The Minister has indicated that a final decision on the project will be taken after reviewing the committee’s report and considering all environmental aspects. The project’s future hinges on finding a solution that addresses both traffic needs and environmental sustainability.
