India-Suriname ties rooted in ‘family’ bond: Jaishankar

India and Suriname share a unique and deeply rooted relationship stemming from the Girmitiya labour migration of the 19th century, as highlighted during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s recent visit to the South American nation. The “Girmitiya” were indentured labourers, primarily from India, who were transported to Suriname to work on sugar plantations following the abolition of slavery.

Jaishankar emphasized that this shared history isn’t merely a historical fact but a living, breathing connection that continues to shape the bilateral relationship. Approximately 27% of Suriname’s population is of Indian origin, maintaining strong cultural ties with India through language, religion, and traditions.

During his visit, Jaishankar inaugurated the renovated Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre in Paramaribo, signifying India’s commitment to preserving and promoting Indian culture within the Surinamese diaspora. Discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in areas like healthcare, digital technology, renewable energy, and capacity building. India offered assistance in establishing a Centre of Excellence in Information Technology and a Super Specialty Hospital in Suriname.

Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to South-South cooperation and addressing global challenges. Suriname voiced its support for India’s permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council. The visit also saw the signing of agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation in various fields.

Jaishankar’s interactions with Surinamese President Chandrikapersad Santokhi and other leaders underscored the mutual desire to elevate the bilateral partnership. He noted the growing Indian investment in Suriname, particularly in the technology sector, and expressed optimism about further economic collaboration. The visit served to reinforce the “family bond” between the two nations, built on a shared heritage and a commitment to a mutually beneficial future. The historical connection is viewed as a strong foundation for continued collaboration and understanding.
