Dharmendra Pradhan, BJP leader and Union Education Minister, alleges a systematic erosion of democracy in West Bengal under the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government. He claims the state is governed by “extortionists and cut money syndicates,” hindering fair political activity and citizen rights.
Pradhan points to instances of violence and intimidation during the recent Panchayat elections, describing them as marred by widespread irregularities and booth capturing. He asserts opposition parties were prevented from filing nominations, campaigning freely, and agents were obstructed from monitoring polling booths. This created an environment of fear, effectively denying voters a genuine choice.
He criticizes the State Election Commission (SEC) for its handling of the polls, alleging it failed to ensure a free and fair process. Pradhan suggests the SEC acted under pressure from the ruling party, contributing to the compromised electoral environment. He highlights reports of ballot paper destruction and manipulation as evidence of systemic failures.
The BJP leader connects the current situation to a long-standing pattern of political violence in West Bengal, arguing it’s not an isolated incident but a deliberate strategy to suppress dissent and maintain power. He accuses the TMC of fostering a culture of fear where individuals are afraid to voice opposition or seek redressal for grievances.
Pradhan emphasizes the importance of a strong opposition and a level playing field for all political parties in a democracy. He contends that the TMC’s actions are undermining these fundamental principles, leading to a breakdown of democratic norms. He calls for a thorough investigation into the alleged irregularities and demands accountability from those responsible.
He further states that the situation in Bengal reflects a broader concern about the decline of democratic values and the need to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process across the country. He believes a free and fair election is crucial for upholding the principles of democracy and ensuring the voice of the people is heard.
