Bihar’s cabinet is set for expansion on May 7th, with a swearing-in ceremony scheduled at Raj Bhavan. This expansion involves both new inductions and reshuffling of portfolios within the Nitish Kumar-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.
The event is significant due to the anticipated attendance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, alongside BJP national president J.P. Nadda. This high-level participation underscores the importance the BJP places on the Bihar coalition.
The expansion will accommodate representatives from all three coalition partners: Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)], Bharatiya Janata Party [BJP], and Hindustan Awam Morcha [HAM]. Sources indicate that the BJP will receive a substantial share of ministerial berths, reflecting its position as the dominant partner within the alliance following the recent Lok Sabha elections results.
Specifically, the BJP is expected to be allocated between 12-14 ministerial positions, including a potential Deputy Chief Minister post. The JD(U) is likely to retain a similar number of portfolios as previously held, while HAM, led by Jitan Ram Manjhi, is anticipated to receive one or two berths.
Discussions regarding portfolio allocation are currently underway amongst the coalition partners. Key considerations include balancing regional representation and accommodating the demands of various factions within the parties.
The expansion is also seen as a move to strengthen the NDA government’s stability and effectiveness ahead of future political challenges. The BJP’s state unit is actively involved in coordinating the event and ensuring smooth proceedings. State BJP chief Samrat Choudhary confirmed the attendance of the Prime Minister and Home Minister, highlighting the national leadership’s commitment to the Bihar government. The final list of ministers is expected to be finalized shortly before the swearing-in ceremony. This cabinet reshuffle aims to reflect the new political realities and power dynamics within the Bihar NDA.
