Police arrest inter-state red sanders smuggler, seize huge cache of logs

The Andhra Pradesh Police have arrested an interstate red sanders smuggler, identified as K. Venkatesh alias Venkateswara Reddi, and seized a substantial quantity of red sanders logs worth approximately ₹4 crore. The operation was a joint effort between the Special Enforcement Bureau (SEB) and the Tirupati Urban Police.

Venkatesh, a native of Tamil Nadu, is considered a key figure in the interstate smuggling network, operating primarily between Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. He has multiple cases registered against him in both Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu related to red sanders smuggling.

The seizure included 1,738 logs of red sanders, along with three vehicles – two lorries and a tempo – used for transporting the logs. The logs were discovered hidden in a remote location near Tirupati. Police believe Venkatesh was coordinating the movement of the logs to Tamil Nadu for further processing and eventual export.

This arrest follows a period of intensified efforts by the Andhra Pradesh Police to curb red sanders smuggling. The SEB has been focusing on dismantling smuggling networks and apprehending key individuals involved in the illegal trade. Recent operations have resulted in the seizure of significant quantities of red sanders and the arrest of numerous smugglers.

Authorities state that Venkatesh had been evading arrest for a considerable time, frequently changing locations to avoid detection. His arrest is considered a significant breakthrough in the ongoing fight against red sanders smuggling in the region. Investigations are underway to identify Venkatesh’s associates and trace the source of the seized logs, as well as the intended destination for the smuggled wood. The police are also working to identify and seize assets acquired through illegal activities. The recovered logs have been handed over to the Forest Department for safe keeping and further action.
