A five-day personality development camp was recently held in Kerala for individuals with intellectual disabilities, organized by the Kerala State Commission for the Protection of Child Rights in association with the Department of Social Justice and the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities (NIEPVD). The camp, named ‘Unarvu’ (Awakening), aimed to enhance the self-confidence, communication skills, and overall personality of 30 participants aged between 16 and 25 from various districts of Kerala.
The program featured a diverse curriculum including yoga, meditation, art therapy, music therapy, and interactive sessions focused on life skills. Experts in psychology, special education, and communication facilitated the sessions. A key component was training in self-advocacy, empowering participants to express their needs and rights effectively. Participants were also given guidance on personal hygiene, social etiquette, and financial literacy.
The camp addressed challenges faced by individuals with intellectual disabilities, such as social stigma and limited opportunities. Organizers emphasized the importance of inclusive education and employment. Sessions were designed to foster a supportive and encouraging environment, promoting peer learning and collaboration.
Commission chairperson K.V. Manoj Kumar highlighted the camp’s objective to equip participants with the necessary tools to lead independent and dignified lives. He stressed the need for society to recognize and value the potential of individuals with disabilities. The camp concluded with a cultural program showcasing the talents of the participants. NIEPVD Director Dr. M. Mukesh provided technical support and expertise throughout the event. The initiative reflects a growing commitment in Kerala to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities, focusing on holistic development and social inclusion. Future plans include expanding the program to reach a larger number of beneficiaries and incorporating vocational training components.
