## Mananchira-Vellimadukunnu Road Widening Project Summary
The widening of the Mananchira-Vellimadukunnu road in Kerala is significantly delayed due to a severe labour shortage. The project, aiming to improve connectivity and reduce traffic congestion, has stalled despite sufficient funding and material availability.
Originally slated for completion in March 2024, the project is now facing indefinite delays. Contractors are struggling to find skilled and unskilled labourers, impacting progress on crucial aspects like road cutting, piling, and bridge construction. The shortage is attributed to several factors including reverse migration of workers to their home states following the pandemic, and their preference for employment in the construction of the Kochi Metro and other Gulf-funded projects offering higher wages and better working conditions.
The project involves widening the 26.5 km stretch of road to a four-lane carriageway, including the construction of two flyovers and several culverts. Approximately 85% of land acquisition has been completed, with the remaining portion facing legal hurdles. While land acquisition isn’t the primary cause of the delay currently, it remains a concern.
The Public Works Department (PWD) acknowledges the issue and is exploring solutions. These include attempts to attract workers from other states and discussions with contractors to revise work schedules. However, finding a sustainable solution remains challenging.
The delay is causing inconvenience to commuters and impacting local businesses reliant on smooth transportation. The project’s cost is also likely to escalate due to the extended timeline and rising material prices. Officials estimate that the project requires around 500 labourers currently, but only a fraction of that number are available. The PWD is hopeful that the situation will improve with the return of migrant workers after the monsoon season, but a concrete timeline for project completion remains uncertain. The project is funded by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB).
