Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi invited DMK leader M.K. Stalin to form the government. The DMK-led alliance secured a significant victory in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, winning 138 seats. The AIADMK alliance managed to win 75 seats.
M.K. Stalin was sworn in as Chief Minister on May 7th at Raj Bhavan. Alongside Stalin, 31 ministers were also sworn in, including 15 from the DMK, 10 from Congress, and 6 from other alliance parties.
Key figures in the new cabinet include Duraimurugan, I. Periyasamy, K.N. Nehru, and E.V. Velu from the DMK. From the Congress, K. Selvaperuntagavan, S.S. Sivakumar, and R. Gandhi were among those sworn in.
The election results represent a decisive shift in Tamil Nadu politics, ending the AIADMK’s decade-long rule. The DMK’s victory is attributed to factors like anti-incumbency against the AIADMK, effective campaign strategies, and promises focused on social welfare and addressing public grievances.
The Governor met with representatives from both the DMK and AIADMK alliances before making his decision. The AIADMK accepted the election results and extended its cooperation to the new government.
The new government’s immediate priorities are expected to be addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, fulfilling election promises related to social welfare schemes, and stabilizing the state’s economy. Stalin has pledged a government that is accessible and responsive to the needs of the people. The DMK’s manifesto included commitments to increase social security pensions, provide financial assistance to women, and improve infrastructure.
