Abhishek Banerjee, National General Secretary of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), has publicly questioned the credibility of West Bengal’s electoral process and accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of partisan behavior favoring the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Banerjee alleges a systematic attempt to disrupt the democratic process in West Bengal, citing instances of central forces being used to intimidate voters and AITC workers. He specifically criticized the alleged selective deployment of central forces in areas perceived as AITC strongholds.
He raised concerns regarding the transfer of election officials close to the polling dates, suggesting these transfers were strategically timed to influence the election outcome. Banerjee pointed to the disproportionate number of complaints received regarding central forces compared to state police.
Banerjee announced the AITC will move the ECI with evidence of alleged irregularities and demand a thorough investigation. He also stated the party is exploring all legal options, including potentially approaching the Supreme Court, if the ECI fails to address their concerns adequately.
He highlighted discrepancies in the voter turnout data and questioned the ECI’s handling of complaints related to voter intimidation and booth capturing. Banerjee further accused the ECI of being influenced by the BJP and acting against the principles of a free and fair election.
The AITC leader emphasized the importance of a level playing field and expressed his commitment to safeguarding the democratic rights of the people of West Bengal. He warned that any attempt to manipulate the election results would be met with strong resistance from the party and its supporters.
Banerjee’s statements come amidst ongoing elections in West Bengal and reflect the heightened political tensions in the state. The AITC is contesting to retain power, while the BJP is aiming to unseat the incumbent government.
