The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has officially denied reports suggesting it will extend support to T.V.K. Palanivel Rajan’s Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) in the formation of a new government in Tamil Nadu. IUML’s state president, K.A.M. Mohamed Abubacker, clarified that the party has not engaged in any discussions with the TVK regarding potential alliances or support.
These denials surfaced following speculation fueled by a statement from TVK’s Rajan, who indicated possible support from “friendly parties” to avoid a situation where the AIADMK might be compelled to align with the BJP. This led to media reports linking the IUML to potential backing for the TVK.
Abubacker emphasized that the IUML remains a steadfast member of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA). He affirmed the party’s commitment to upholding the alliance’s principles and working towards its continued success. He stated the IUML’s priority is the SPA’s stability and the defeat of the BJP’s influence in Tamil Nadu.
The IUML holds a significant presence in western Tamil Nadu, particularly in areas with substantial Muslim populations. Its nine MLAs could potentially play a crucial role in government formation scenarios if no single party secures a clear majority. However, Abubacker’s statement firmly rejects any deviation from the existing SPA framework.
The clarification from the IUML comes amidst ongoing political maneuvering following the recent state elections. The election results have created a hung assembly, prompting various parties to explore potential coalition options. The AIADMK is reportedly considering an alliance with the BJP, while the TVK, led by Rajan, is attempting to forge a secular alternative. The IUML’s denial significantly diminishes the possibility of the TVK gaining the necessary support to form a government without the backing of the DMK-led alliance. The party’s stance reinforces its loyalty to the SPA and its opposition to any association with the BJP.
