Uttar Pradesh’s Director General of Police (DGP) Prashant Kumar attributes a significant improvement in law and order within the state to data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The NCRB data for 2023 shows a decrease in several key crime categories compared to 2019.
Reported incidents of murder decreased from 3,748 in 2019 to 2,860 in 2023, a reduction of 23.7%. Attempt to murder cases fell from 2,688 to 1,891, representing a 29.7% decrease. Cases of dacoity saw a substantial decline, dropping from 653 to 288 (a 55.7% reduction). Robberies also decreased significantly, from 1,639 to 788 (a 52.1% decrease).
The data further indicates a reduction in crimes against women. Cases of rape decreased from 3,065 in 2019 to 2,289 in 2023 (a 25.4% decrease). Kidnapping and abduction cases also saw a decline, falling from 11,895 to 8,484 (a 28.8% decrease).
Regarding economic offenses, the NCRB data reveals a decrease in cybercrime cases, from 6,244 in 2019 to 5,864 in 2023. However, cases related to fraud saw an increase, rising from 11,483 to 14,884.
The DGP highlighted the state government’s zero-tolerance policy towards crime, increased police presence, and effective use of technology as key factors contributing to the positive trend. He also emphasized the improved conviction rate in criminal cases. Uttar Pradesh now ranks among the states with the lowest rates of several major crimes, according to the NCRB data. The DGP further stated that the focus remains on maintaining this positive momentum and further strengthening law and order in the state.
