Tamil Nadu is expected to receive respite from the intense summer heat for the next week due to a developing weather system. A cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal and the prevalence of easterly winds are predicted to bring widespread rainfall across the state.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a gradual increase in rainfall starting April 29th, with heavier showers likely between May 1st and May 5th. Most districts, particularly those in the northern and interior parts of Tamil Nadu, are expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall. Coastal areas will also receive rainfall, though potentially less intense than inland regions.
Daytime temperatures are anticipated to decrease by 2-3 degrees Celsius across Tamil Nadu, offering relief from the current scorching conditions. Chennai is expected to experience cloudy skies and rainfall, with maximum temperatures potentially dropping to around 32-33 degrees Celsius.
The rainfall is attributed to the interaction between the cyclonic circulation and easterly winds bringing moisture from the Bay of Bengal. This system is different from the usual monsoon patterns and is a localized weather event.
Specifically, districts like Tiruvallur, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, and Madurai are likely to receive significant rainfall. The Nilgiris and Coimbatore may also experience showers.
The IMD has issued warnings for isolated heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, advising residents to take necessary precautions. Fishermen have been advised to be cautious while venturing into the sea.
This spell of rain is expected to provide temporary relief to farmers and replenish water sources. However, it is not expected to be a sustained monsoon onset. The southwest monsoon is still anticipated to arrive on time, around June 1st. The current rainfall is a welcome break from the heatwave conditions that have been prevailing in the state.
