The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has installed a green shade structure at the busy RTC Complex junction in Visakhapatnam to provide relief to commuters and pedestrians from the intense summer heat. This initiative aims to reduce the urban heat island effect and offer a comfortable waiting area.
The structure, covering an area of approximately 600 square feet, is constructed using a steel frame and covered with climbing plants. These plants are expected to create a natural cooling effect through evapotranspiration, lowering the surrounding temperature. The GVMC selected this location due to the high footfall of commuters utilizing the RTC bus station and the lack of natural shade in the area.
The project was undertaken as part of the GVMC’s efforts to enhance the city’s green cover and improve the quality of life for its residents. Officials stated that the green shade is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution compared to traditional concrete shelters. The plants chosen are drought-resistant varieties requiring minimal maintenance.
Commuters have welcomed the initiative, expressing appreciation for the shade and improved aesthetics of the junction. The GVMC plans to replicate this model at other key locations across the city, including near schools, hospitals, and shopping areas, based on the success of the RTC Complex project.
The project cost around ₹3 lakh and was completed within a short timeframe. The GVMC is also focusing on other measures to combat the summer heat, including water sprinkling on roads and promoting tree plantation drives. This green shade structure represents a small but significant step towards creating a more sustainable and comfortable urban environment in Visakhapatnam. The initiative aligns with the city’s broader goals of becoming a more livable and eco-friendly urban center.
