The National Health Authority (NHA) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, IndiaAI Mission, and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) showcased Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions aimed at transforming healthcare claims processing under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY).
The demonstration focused on automating and streamlining the fraud detection and claim processing workflows, currently largely manual and time-consuming. Several AI models developed by IISc were presented, including those for detecting potentially fraudulent claims, predicting claim amounts, and automating claim categorization.
Key highlights include an AI model capable of identifying anomalies in claim data with 83% accuracy, significantly reducing the workload for fraud investigators. Another model predicts claim amounts with reasonable accuracy, aiding in budget planning and risk assessment. Automated claim categorization promises faster processing times and reduced administrative burden.
The collaboration aims to address challenges like inconsistent coding practices, billing errors, and outright fraud, which contribute to substantial financial losses in the AB-PMJAY scheme. The AI solutions are designed to be human-centric, assisting rather than replacing healthcare professionals and investigators.
The NHA intends to integrate these AI solutions into the AB-PMJAY’s existing IT systems in a phased manner. A pilot project is planned to test the effectiveness of these models in a real-world setting. The IndiaAI mission is providing the infrastructure and computational resources for developing and deploying these AI models.
The initiative aligns with the government’s vision of leveraging AI for public good and improving the efficiency and transparency of healthcare services. The long-term goal is to create a robust and secure healthcare ecosystem that benefits both patients and healthcare providers. The showcased solutions represent a significant step towards achieving this goal by harnessing the power of AI to address critical challenges in healthcare claims management. Further development will focus on expanding the scope of AI applications to other areas of the AB-PMJAY scheme.
