Tamil Nadu government formation: Left backs TVK but VCK undecided as uncertainty continues

Tamil Nadu’s political landscape is shifting as the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] have extended unconditional support to the Tamil Nadu Kalvi Kazhagam (TVK) and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) for the upcoming state government formation. This support follows the recent assembly elections where the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) secured a significant victory but fell short of an absolute majority.

Both CPI and CPI(M) state secretaries have confirmed their parties’ decision, emphasizing the need to prevent the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) from regaining power. They view the TVK and VCK as secular, progressive forces aligned with their ideologies. The CPI(M) specifically highlighted the importance of a government committed to social justice and secular principles.

The VCK, led by Thol. Thirumavalavan, is currently deliberating on whether to reciprocate the support and join the coalition. Initial indications suggest a positive inclination, but a final decision is pending discussions within the party. The VCK’s support is considered crucial as it could significantly bolster the ruling coalition’s strength.

The DMK, currently in talks with various parties, welcomes the support from the Left parties and anticipates a favorable response from the VCK. The DMK aims to form a stable government with a comfortable majority, and the inclusion of these parties is seen as vital to achieving that goal.

This development signifies a potential realignment of political forces in Tamil Nadu, with the Left parties and the VCK playing a kingmaker role. The focus now remains on the VCK’s final decision and the subsequent allocation of portfolios within the new government. The support is based on a common understanding to uphold secularism and social justice, countering the AIADMK’s potential resurgence. The formation of the government is expected shortly, with ongoing negotiations determining the specifics of the coalition.
