Teen dies after falling into well in Kannur

A 16-year-old boy, Muhammad Ashiq, tragically died after falling into an open well in Kannur district, Kerala, on May 16, 2024. The incident occurred around 4:30 PM near his residence in Pariyaram. Ashiq was a student of Plus One at the Government Higher Secondary School, Pariyaram.

According to reports, Ashiq was playing with friends when he accidentally slipped and fell into the well. Local residents and fire and rescue personnel immediately initiated rescue operations. The well was approximately 30 feet deep and contained a significant amount of water, complicating the rescue efforts.

Fire and Rescue Services personnel from Kannur and Koothuparamba stations arrived at the scene and worked for over two hours to locate and retrieve the body. Divers were utilized in the challenging conditions. The body was eventually recovered and taken to Pariyaram Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities are emphasizing the need for owners to properly secure open wells to prevent such tragedies. This incident highlights the recurring danger posed by uncovered wells, particularly during the monsoon season when water levels rise.

Local authorities and community members have expressed grief over the loss of the young student. The incident has renewed calls for stricter regulations and increased awareness regarding well safety across the region. The local panchayath is considering measures to identify and cover all open wells within its jurisdiction. This is not an isolated incident, and similar tragedies have been reported in Kerala previously, prompting ongoing efforts to address the issue of unsafe wells.
