Caterers in Kerala hit the streets as LPG price hike triggers crisis

Kerala caterers are protesting significant increases in Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) prices, leading to a crisis in the industry. The recent ₹100 per cylinder hike, following multiple increases, has made operations unsustainable for many small and medium-scale catering businesses.

Caterers report a 30-40% increase in operational costs due to the LPG price rise, impacting wedding celebrations, events, and daily food services. Many are facing closure or are forced to significantly increase prices, potentially losing customers. The All Kerala Caterers Association estimates over 6,000 catering units are at risk, potentially affecting the livelihoods of around 25,000 workers.

Protests have been held across Kerala, including in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode, with caterers demanding government intervention. They are requesting a reduction in LPG prices or a subsidy to alleviate the financial burden. Some caterers are considering switching to alternative fuels like firewood, but this poses environmental concerns and logistical challenges.

The industry argues that the price hikes are disproportionate to the profits they generate, especially considering the fixed pricing often associated with wedding catering. They highlight the essential role they play in social events and the broader economy.

The association has submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister and is seeking discussions with oil companies. They warn of widespread protests if their demands are not addressed. The situation is particularly dire as the wedding season approaches, a peak period for catering businesses. The rising costs are forcing caterers to either absorb losses, compromise on food quality, or pass the burden onto customers, creating a difficult situation for all stakeholders.
