The Idukki District Congress Committee (DCC) has initiated disciplinary action against Congress workers for publicly rallying in support of Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan during a recent visit to Munnar. The action stems from concerns that the rally violated party protocol and appeared as a show of one-upmanship, potentially undermining collective leadership.
Specifically, the DCC has issued show-cause notices to 13 Congress workers, including the Idukki District Youth Congress president, for organizing the rally without prior permission from the party leadership. The rally, featuring slogans praising Mr. Satheesan, occurred during a UDF protest against the alleged neglect of Munnar by the State government.
DCC president C.P. Roy stated the rally was unauthorized and created a perception of factionalism within the party. He emphasized the Congress’s tradition of collective leadership and expressed concern that such displays of individual support could weaken the party’s unity. The DCC views the incident as a breach of discipline and a deviation from established norms.
The show-cause notices request explanations from the involved workers regarding their actions and the reasons for organizing the rally without authorization. The DCC will review their responses before deciding on further disciplinary measures, which could range from warnings to suspensions.
This action reflects a broader attempt by the Congress leadership to maintain discipline and prevent the emergence of personality-driven factions, particularly as the Lok Sabha elections approach. The party aims to present a united front and avoid internal conflicts that could harm its electoral prospects. The incident highlights the sensitivity surrounding leadership dynamics within the Kerala Congress and the importance of adhering to party protocols. The DCC’s response underscores its commitment to upholding these protocols and ensuring collective responsibility.
