Final decision on Kerala CM turns into political cliff-hanger as ball now in Congress High Command’s court

## Kerala CM Decision: Summary

The selection of Kerala’s next Chief Minister remains unresolved, hinging on the Congress High Command’s decision. Despite initial expectations of a swift resolution following the UDF’s victory in the Lok Sabha elections, a formal announcement is delayed.

Two primary contenders emerged: incumbent V.D. Satheesan, the Leader of Opposition, and K. Muraleedharan, the Kannur MP. Both have significant support within the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). Satheesan is favored by a substantial number of MLAs and is seen as having effectively led the opposition during the previous assembly. Muraleedharan, benefiting from a strong central leadership connection and a recent Lok Sabha win, also commands considerable influence.

Initial discussions within the KPCC failed to reach a consensus. A formal meeting of the KPCC executive committee was held, but no clear recommendation was made to the High Command. Both Satheesan and Muraleedharan presented their cases, highlighting their strengths and suitability for the role.

Several factors complicate the decision. There’s a desire to balance representation between different communities and regions within Kerala. The High Command is also considering the need to rejuvenate the party and project a strong leadership image ahead of future elections.

Reports suggest differing opinions within the High Command itself. Some leaders favor Satheesan for his experience and established position, while others lean towards Muraleedharan, believing his election to Parliament provides a fresh perspective.

The delay has caused some unease within the Congress party in Kerala, with concerns about potential factionalism. The High Command has reportedly sought feedback from various stakeholders, including senior leaders and MPs, before making a final decision. A decision is anticipated soon, but the exact timing remains uncertain. The chosen candidate will face the challenge of leading the UDF in the upcoming local body elections and preparing for the next assembly elections.
