T.N. Government formation: IUML meeting to decide on its stand

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) is poised to play a kingmaker role in Tamil Nadu following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The DMK-led INDIA bloc failed to secure a simple majority, winning 38 seats, one short of the 39 needed. The IUML, with its single seat win, becomes crucial for government formation.

IUML’s national president K. Navas Kani won the Ramanathapuram seat, defeating BJP’s Immanuel Sekaran. This win is significant as the party has consistently held this seat since 2009.

The party is currently engaged in discussions with both the DMK and the BJP. DMK representatives, including Stalin, have already reached out to the IUML leadership. Simultaneously, BJP leaders, including Nalin Kumar Kateel, are also attempting to secure IUML support.

IUML’s central leadership is deliberating on the options, considering factors like secular credentials and the broader political landscape. The party has a history of aligning with secular forces, traditionally supporting the DMK in Tamil Nadu and the Congress at the national level.

However, the BJP’s overtures and potential offers are being carefully evaluated. The IUML is expected to make a decision based on what best serves the interests of the Muslim community and upholds secular principles.

Key demands from the IUML are expected to include representation in the Union Cabinet and assurances on protecting minority rights. The party is also likely to seek commitments on addressing issues concerning the Muslim community, such as education and employment.

The final decision rests with the IUML’s high-level committee, which is expected to announce its stance soon. The outcome will significantly impact the formation of the next government at the Centre. The party’s support could either pave the way for a DMK-led coalition or potentially open doors for the BJP.
