Delhi has recorded the highest number of crimes against foreigners among all Union Territories in 2023, according to data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The city reported 85 cases, a significant increase from the 48 cases registered in 2022.
The NCRB data indicates a nationwide rise in crimes against foreigners, with 535 cases reported across India in 2023, compared to 414 in 2022. However, Delhi accounts for approximately 15.9% of these cases, leading all Union Territories.
Specifically, the crimes reported in Delhi include cheating (34 cases), assault (21 cases), theft (14 cases), and other offenses. Notably, there were no reported cases of rape against foreign nationals in Delhi in 2023.
Following Delhi, Puducherry recorded the second-highest number of crimes against foreigners with 27 cases, while Chandigarh reported 16. Lakshadweep registered the lowest with zero reported cases.
The increase in crimes against foreigners in Delhi has raised concerns about the safety and security of international visitors. Authorities have not yet released detailed analysis regarding the reasons for this surge, but potential factors could include increased tourism post-pandemic and evolving crime patterns.
Nationally, Uttar Pradesh reported the highest number of crimes against foreigners with 133 cases, followed by Maharashtra (110) and Rajasthan (73). These states account for over half of all crimes against foreigners reported in the country.
The NCRB data highlights the need for enhanced security measures and targeted policing strategies to protect foreign nationals in Delhi and other major cities. It also underscores the importance of raising awareness among tourists about potential risks and providing them with access to support services. The data is based on FIRs registered with the police and may not reflect the full extent of crimes committed against foreigners.
