NCRB: Crime rate decreases in Karnataka, but rate of violent crimes up in 2024

## Karnataka Crime Data 2023 Summary

Karnataka witnessed an overall decrease in the reported crime rate in 2023 compared to 2022, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data. Total Indian Penal Code (IPC) crimes decreased from 1,28,828 in 2022 to 1,21,584 in 2023, a reduction of approximately 5.6%.

However, the state experienced a rise in several categories of violent crimes. Murder cases increased from 221 to 283, representing a 28.05% increase. Attempt to murder cases also rose, from 348 to 438, a 25.86% increase. Cases related to causing grievous hurt saw a significant jump, increasing from 1,698 to 2,299, a 35.38% rise.

Crimes against women showed a mixed trend. While overall crimes against women decreased slightly from 14,304 to 13,898, certain categories increased. Rape cases rose from 735 to 833, a 13.33% increase. Cruelty by husband or relatives increased from 6,418 to 6,799.

Property crimes generally decreased. Theft cases declined from 64,989 to 55,849. Burglary cases decreased from 17,819 to 15,499. Robbery cases also saw a reduction, falling from 3,194 to 2,699. Motor Vehicle Theft decreased from 13,814 to 11,841.

Cybercrime reported a substantial increase, with cases rising from 2,398 to 4,880, a 103.38% increase. This included offenses related to cheating with identity theft, and other cyber offenses.

The conviction rate in Karnataka for IPC crimes was 36.4% in 2023, slightly lower than the national average of 39.4%. The pendency of cases remains a concern, with a significant number of cases still awaiting trial.
