Tamil Nadu’s Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] have extended unconditional support to the Tamil Nadu Viduthalai Kazhagam (TVK) and the VCK (Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi) for government formation following the recent Assembly elections. This support comes after the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) secured a majority but fell short of an absolute majority, necessitating external support.
Both CPI and CPI(M) state secretaries have confirmed their parties’ decision, emphasizing the need to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from gaining influence in Tamil Nadu. They view supporting the TVK-VCK combine as crucial for upholding secular and progressive values. The CPI(M) specifically highlighted the importance of a government committed to social justice.
The VCK is currently deliberating on whether to extend its support, with a decision expected soon. VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan has indicated a positive inclination, but the party is likely to finalize its stance after internal discussions.
The DMK, led by M.K. Stalin, is poised to form the government, and discussions are underway regarding power-sharing arrangements with its allies. The TVK and VCK played a significant role in the DMK-led alliance’s victory, particularly by securing seats in constituencies with substantial Dalit populations.
This support from the Left parties and the potential backing from the VCK solidify the DMK’s position and ensure a stable government. The focus now shifts to portfolio allocation and the formation of a cabinet that reflects the coalition’s diverse representation. The outcome of the VCK’s decision will further define the composition and strength of the new government. The overarching aim of these parties is to establish a government that prioritizes social justice, secularism, and opposes the BJP’s political agenda in the state.
