Mysuru tries mirror trick to curb public urination

Mysuru city is implementing a novel approach to deter public urination—installing convex mirrors at identified spots. The initiative, spearheaded by the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC), aims to create a sense of being watched, discouraging individuals from urinating in public.

The project began as a pilot in November 2023, focusing on areas near the Mysuru City Bus Stand, KR Circle, and other frequently affected locations. Following initial success and positive public response, the MCC is expanding the mirror installation to more areas across the city. Around 20 mirrors have been installed so far, with plans to add more based on need and effectiveness.

The idea originated from observing similar strategies employed in other cities and countries. The mirrors, costing approximately ₹3,000 each, are strategically placed to reflect the image of anyone approaching the spot, giving the illusion of surveillance. Officials believe this psychological deterrent is more effective and cost-efficient than constant policing or increased cleaning efforts.

MCC Commissioner Ashad Shaik stated the initiative is part of a broader effort to improve the city’s cleanliness and public hygiene. While acknowledging the need for more public toilets, the mirrors offer an immediate solution to address the issue in the interim. The corporation is also working on increasing the number of public restrooms, particularly in crowded areas.

The response from the public has been largely positive, with many appreciating the innovative approach. Local vendors and commuters have reported a noticeable decrease in public urination in areas where the mirrors have been installed. The MCC intends to monitor the long-term impact of the project and potentially replicate it in other cities facing similar challenges. The initiative is being viewed as a simple yet effective solution to a persistent urban problem, combining behavioral psychology with urban management.
