Delhi has launched a 15-day awareness drive to prepare for the Census of India 2027. The campaign, initiated by the Delhi government’s Directorate of Economics & Statistics, aims to educate citizens about the importance of the census and encourage their full participation.
The drive will utilize various mediums including social media, FM radio, television, and outdoor advertisements to reach a wide audience. Information regarding the census process, data confidentiality, and the benefits of accurate enumeration will be disseminated. Focus will be on dispelling myths and addressing concerns citizens may have about providing information.
Key objectives include creating awareness about the census schedule, the types of data collected, and the role of enumerators. The campaign will emphasize the census’s crucial role in policy making, resource allocation, and developmental planning. Accurate census data is vital for identifying needs and ensuring equitable distribution of benefits across different sections of society.
The Directorate plans to engage with Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), market associations, and educational institutions to maximize outreach. Training programs for enumerators and census officials are also being conducted to ensure efficient and accurate data collection.
This is a preparatory phase, with the actual house-listing and housing census scheduled to begin in April 2024. The population enumeration phase will follow in February 2027. The last census was conducted in 2011, and the delay in the subsequent census, initially planned for 2021, was attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic and logistical challenges.
The government highlights that the census is a legally mandated exercise under the Census Act of 1948 and emphasizes the civic duty of citizens to cooperate with census officials. The campaign aims to foster a collaborative environment to ensure a comprehensive and accurate count of Delhi’s population.
