Amit Shah arrives in Kolkata to attend BJP’s legislature party meeting, swearing in of new govt

## Summary of The Hindu Article: Amit Shah in Kolkata – Key Points

Amit Shah, Union Home Minister, addressed a BJP rally in Kolkata, asserting the party’s confidence in forming the government in West Bengal by 2026.

He predicted the BJP will win a majority of Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal in the 2024 elections, and subsequently, the state assembly elections in 2026.

Shah criticized the TMC government led by Mamata Banerjee, alleging widespread corruption, nepotism, and the prevalence of ‘tolabaji’ (extortion). He specifically mentioned alleged scams related to teacher recruitment and ration distribution.

He accused the TMC of prioritizing the interests of a select few families over the welfare of the general public.

Shah highlighted the BJP’s commitment to implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and assured that the process of granting citizenship would begin immediately after the law’s implementation. He stated no date will be set for its implementation, but it will happen soon.

He emphasized the BJP’s focus on national security, particularly border security, and vowed to end infiltration from Bangladesh.

The rally aimed to energize BJP workers for both the upcoming Lok Sabha and assembly elections.

Shah claimed the TMC government is obstructing central schemes meant for the benefit of West Bengal’s citizens. He cited examples like Awas Yojana and PM Kisan Samman Nidhi.

He asserted that West Bengal’s development has been hindered by the TMC’s policies and that the BJP will prioritize good governance and economic progress if elected.

The BJP aims to position itself as the primary alternative to the TMC, capitalizing on anti-incumbency sentiment and allegations of corruption.

Shah stated the swearing-in ceremony of the next West Bengal Chief Minister will be held on May 8, 2026, signifying the party’s firm belief in its victory.

He called for a “double engine ki sarkar” – a BJP government both at the Centre and in West Bengal – to accelerate the state’s development.
